Madrid, 10 July, 2024. Rovensa Next, the biosolutions business unit of Rovensa Group, announces the launch of Wiibio, a soil-regenerating biofertiliser with biostimulant properties, that aims to enhance plant developmenti, supporting growers with the stimulation of the natural plant growth cycle by contributing to soil health and vitality.
In Europe specifically, the European Commission estimates that 60-70% of soils are unhealthy, and if we don’t act now, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that by 2050, 90% of all soils globally will be degraded, threatening our global climate and food security. As part of its commitment to helping customers solve their sustainability challenges, Rovensa Next is leading innovation and research to uncover cutting-edge, and sustainable solutions.
Wiibio is based on a specifically selected biostimulant Bacillus subtilis F1 bacterial strain, which is combined with organic matter and rhizogenic substances enriched with calcium designed to improve the microbial diversity of soil. Introducing this product to Rovensa Next’s holistic portfolio fulfils a strong need to improve soil health for better yield and quality of crops.
Healthy soils, better crops
According to the FAO, healthy soils are the basis for healthy food production and play an essential role in food security. Soils host a quarter of our planet’s biodiversity and help to combat and adapt to climate change by storing and filtering water. However, there are a variety of factors that impact soil vitality, such as the intensification of agriculture, which can create an imbalance in nutrients and directly affect crop quality and performance, to the detriment of growers.
“We know it to be true that soil health has a direct effect on the bottom line for growers. A diverse community of beneficial microorganisms can improve soil health by promoting organic matter mineralisation, stress tolerance, and nutrient availability. With Wiibio, which is a soil microbiota enhancer, we are providing a biosolution that aims to improve soil health, leading to a more sustainable agriculture and better results for customers,” said José Nolasco, Head of Global R&D Bionutrition of Rovensa Next.
Bacillus subtilis F1 effect on soil and plants
Wiibio is based on a strain of Bacillus subtilis, which is part of the Bacillus genus, a group of bacteria known as a plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria. With its unique composition, Wiibio enhances the soil microbiome by recruiting beneficial microorganisms to the root system and increasing the nutrient use efficiency by improving phosphate solubilisation and iron availability in soil, acting as a growth promoter.
“Wiibio helps to maintain a living, healthy and vitality soil, rich in rhizobacteria. One of our main focuses in R&D has been on microorganisms and how we can use them to create biosolutions that support crop productivity and ultimately the sustainability and profitability of our customers. In this sense, Wiibio is a revolutionary biostimulant that strengths our innovative and holistic portfolio of sustainable solutions that will drive the new era of agriculture,” stated José Nolasco.
This versatile biofertiliser can be used in a wide range of crops and is specifically formulated for soil application during the early to mid-vegetative cycle, as well as post-harvest in perennial crops.
